GEO, AEO and LLM SEO get thrown around like they’re interchangeable. They’re not, and mixing them up leads to the wrong strategy pointed at the wrong platform.
Generative engine optimization is about getting your brand cited inside AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Answer engine optimization is about winning the direct-answer spot, in voice search, featured snippets and AI-generated summaries. LLM SEO is the broader discipline of making your content legible and citable to large language models in general, closer to a parent category than a rival. All three sit under the same AI-search umbrella, and all three matter, just not for the same reasons.
This piece breaks down what each term actually means, where India’s real search interest in each one currently stands, and which one is worth prioritising first depending on where your business is today.
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the practice of shaping content so AI tools cite it, quote it or reference it directly when they generate an answer, rather than just ranking it in a list of blue links. Instead of optimising purely for a Google results page, GEO optimises for the moment an AI model decides which sources to pull from while writing its own response.
In India, “generative engine optimization” pulls 2,100 searches a month, with the bracketed shorthand “generative engine optimization (geo)” adding another 250, and “geo generative engine optimization” a further 150. The direct question “what is generative engine optimization” carries 250 searches a month on its own. A separate 300 searches a month go to “generative engine optimization services” specifically, real evidence that a meaningful share of this audience is past the curiosity stage and already shopping for a provider.
Pyrite Digital’s generative engine optimization services and our separate explainer on what GEO actually means go into the mechanics in more depth.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization, AEO, is the practice of structuring content so it gets selected as the direct answer, in a Google AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a voice search response, rather than requiring the user to click through and read a full page. Where GEO is about being cited inside an AI-generated answer, AEO is about being the answer itself, usually through clear question-and-answer formatting, structured data, and concise, front-loaded responses.
A quick note on sourcing here. AEO does not appear anywhere in Pyrite’s own keyword research for this topic cluster. The numbers in this section come from a separate Ahrefs pull done specifically for this article, not from the same keyword database used for the GEO and LLM SEO figures elsewhere on this page.
That data shows AEO search interest in India moving from single and low double-digit searches through most of 2023, through two distinct jumps in June and November 2024, to a settled plateau of 900 to 1,080 searches a month through 2025 and 2026. Our AEO vs SEO breakdown covers how this changes a content strategy in more detail, and Pyrite’s answer engine optimization services page outlines what that work looks like in practice.
What Is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is the umbrella term for making content legible, structured and citable to large language models in general, not just to one specific tool or answer format. It overlaps with both GEO and AEO, and in practice most of the technical work looks similar: clear structure, factual accuracy, entity clarity, and content a language model can extract and repeat accurately.
India search data shows real appetite for the basics here. “What is LLM SEO” pulls 100 searches a month, “what is LLM in SEO” another 90, and “LLM full form in SEO” a further 100, all signs that a large part of this audience is still learning the vocabulary even as the discipline itself grows. “LLM in SEO” carries 250 searches a month as a close variant of the main term, and “LLM SEO services” adds another 100 from buyers actively looking for a provider. “LLM SEO meaning” adds 50 more of the same definitional pattern.
Our LLM SEO services page and LLM SEO strategy checklist cover the practical side of this.
GEO vs AEO vs LLM SEO: Where They Overlap and Where They Differ
The three disciplines share a common goal, getting found by AI rather than just by traditional search, but they target different moments in how an AI tool actually works.
Discipline | Primary Target | What “Winning” Looks Like |
GEO | AI chat tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity) | Your brand or content gets cited or referenced in the AI’s generated response |
AEO | Voice search, featured snippets, AI Overviews | Your content becomes the direct answer shown, often without a click |
LLM SEO | Large language models generally | Your content is structured clearly enough for any LLM to extract, understand and repeat accurately |
In practice, optimising for one usually helps with the others. Clear structure, direct answers, credible sourcing and factual accuracy are the foundation all three need. The differences matter more in measurement and platform focus than in day-to-day content work. GEO strategy tends to track citation frequency inside specific AI tools, AEO tracks featured snippet and AI Overview wins, and LLM SEO is harder to measure directly since it’s the broadest of the three and spans tools you may never get visibility into.
Which Search Interest Is Actually Growing Fastest in India?
Search interest tells a slightly different story for each of the three, based on Ahrefs’ historical India data pulled for this article.
- GEO from near zero for most of 2023, first real volume in December 2023 (52 searches), peaking at 3,505 searches in July 2025, the sharpest single spike of the three, now settled around 1,700 to 2,300 a month.
- AEO from single and double digits through most of 2023, two step-changes in June and November 2024, settling into the steadiest plateau of the three at 900 to 1,080 a month.
- LLM SEO from single digits through 2023 and 2024, a twelvefold jump from 65 to 1,185 searches between January and August 2025, now settled at 500 to 600 a month.
Line them up and GEO had the biggest single spike, AEO has the flattest, most consistent growth curve, and LLM SEO had the sharpest short-window jump of the three even though its final settled volume is the smallest. None of them show signs of fading. All three climbed from near nothing to a real, sustained search category inside three years.
Which One Should You Prioritise First?
The honest answer depends on where your content already sits, not a fixed ranking of the three.
If your business already publishes strong, well-structured content and ranks reasonably in traditional search, AEO is usually the fastest place to see results. It builds directly on work you’ve likely already done, tightening structure and directness rather than starting from scratch.
If you’re starting closer to zero on AI visibility specifically, GEO deserves the first serious investment. It’s the term with the steepest growth curve in India’s search data, and the specific tactics, getting cited by name inside ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity responses, are the most visibly different from traditional SEO work, which also makes them the easiest to underinvest in by accident.
LLM SEO is less a separate project than groundwork underneath the other two. The clearer and more machine-legible your content is generally, the better it performs across every AI surface, not just the one you’re actively targeting.
None of these decisions need to happen in isolation. If you want a clear read on where your own site currently stands across GEO, AEO and LLM SEO specifically, Pyrite Digital’s AI search audit checks all three at once. Get in touch and we’ll show you exactly where the gaps are.
Frequently Asked Questions
Generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on getting cited or referenced inside AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on becoming the direct answer shown in voice search, featured snippets and Google AI Overviews. They overlap heavily in the content work required, clear structure and direct answers, but target different platforms and are measured differently.
They’re closely related but not identical. LLM SEO is the broader practice of making content legible to large language models in general. GEO is a more specific application of that, focused on earning citations inside generative AI chat tools specifically. Most GEO work is a subset of good LLM SEO.
By peak search volume, GEO grew fastest, spiking to 3,505 monthly searches in July 2025 according to Ahrefs data. By speed of increase, LLM SEO jumped hardest in the shortest window, a twelvefold rise between January and August 2025. AEO had the steadiest, most consistent growth of the three, without a single sharp spike.
It depends on your starting point. Businesses with strong existing content usually see the fastest results from AEO. Businesses with little to no current AI visibility usually benefit most from starting with GEO. LLM SEO underpins both, so it’s rarely the wrong place to invest, just rarely the fastest one to show a result on its own.
Search volume for generative engine optimization and LLM SEO, including definitional variants like “what is generative engine optimization” and “what is llm seo”, comes from Pyrite Digital’s own internal keyword research for the Indian market. Historical trend data for all three terms, including answer engine optimization, comes from a separate Ahrefs pull done specifically for this article. AEO does not currently appear in Pyrite’s own keyword database for this topic.
